Suicide Prevention Week--Day Four

Yesterday, I posted several info-graphics from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  Today, being the 18-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I thought it would be fitting to write about Veterans and suicide.

❥Between October, 2017 and November 2018, 18 veterans died by suicide on VA (Veteran Affairs) Hospital grounds in the United States.
❥In 2018, 70 Scottish veterans died by suicide.
❥According to the National Suicide Data Report 2005-2015, released by Veteran Affairs in June, 2018, the average number of veterans who die by suicide per day is 20.

Earlier this week, I received an email from the AFSP asking that a reach out to my members of congress and ask them to support three bills:

  1. H.R. 1749 PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program Act
    1. To authorize the secretary of Veterans Affairs to make grants to State and local entities to carry out peer-to-peer mental health programs.
  2. H.R. 2629/S. 711 Care And Readiness Enhancement (CARE) for Reservists Act
    1. To amend title 38, United States Code, to expand eligibility for mental health services from the Department of Veterans Affairs to include members of the reserve components of the Armed Forces, and for other purposes.
    2. To amend title 38, United States Code, to expand eligibility for mental health services from the Department of Veterans Affairs to include members of the reserve components of the Armed Forces, and for other purposes.
  3. S.785  Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019
    1. To improve mental health care provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for other purposes.

These bill may not stop all veteran suicides, but if they just save one veteran.  Give the veteran they help that he or she needs, then isn't it worth it?

If you're a veteran, or know one, who is struggling with depression, PTSD, or any other mental health issue, here are some resources:
