Soldiers' Angels

Memorial Day is Monday. Many people are looking forward to their long weekend. But, remember, Memorial Day is more than a day off of work, more than a day of barbecues, and more than a day of sales. Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring the people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

There are many organizations you can donate to in honor of Memorial Day. I wrote an entry about one (Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers Foundation) earlier this month.

But, I want to talk to you today about Soldiers’ Angels.

Several years ago, I signed up to be an “Angel” with Soldiers’ Angels. I sent a letter a week, and a care package a month to a deployed unit. I enjoyed it, but after the unit went home, I didn’t continue.

Through work, I’m helping Soldiers’ Angels again. (Side note:  I love that my employer is committed to giving back.) Yesterday, we made blankets to donate to veterans. It was so much easier than I thought it would be. No sew blankets.

Later during the year we will be sending care packages with hygiene products. Thank you cards from all of us in the company will be included in the packages.

Aside from the blankets and the care packages, Soldiers’ Angels has other programs for past and present members of the armed forces. For Veterans, one of the things SA does is organizes events that benefit homeless and low income veterans.

For those deployed, there are support teams to send baked goods, letters, and cards.

Soldiers’ Angels can provide adaptive laptops to the severely wounded or injured.

And, there’s also support for military families, like adopting a family during the holidays.

There are so many ways to give back with Soldiers’ Angels. This Memorial Day weekend, please look at their website, and maybe you’ll want to help, too.

Thank you to all the U.S. veterans who died protecting our country. And thank you to those that have served or are currently serving.
